CIDEIM AS A REGIONAL TRAINING CENTER FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

As part of the strategy of the Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases – TDR to enhance research capacity in low and middle-income countries, the Regional Training Centers (RTC) initiative was established. RTCs are a network of affiliated institutions of the World Health Organization (WHO) selected through a competitive process to deliver, promote, and manage a portfolio of courses tailored to their respective geographic regions.

In 2008, CIDEIM was designated by TDR as a “Reference Center for the Effective Project Planning and Evaluation (EPPE) course.” Since 2010, it has operated as the Regional Training Center for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC-RTC). The training programs cover topics such as good health research practices and implementation research (IR).

Effective Project Planning and Evaluation in Biomedical Research (EPPE)
Implementation Research (IR MOOC)
Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP)

The LAC-RTC has been instrumental in disseminating various research training courses to foster learning and capacity building. Networking and collaborations with partner universities and training institutions across the region have been crucial in achieving this goal, including the integration of some courses into academic programs.

“Institutionally, at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), capacity-building efforts have focused on training trainers across various disciplines (medicine, nursing, nutrition, physical therapy). The significant achievement has been the incorporation of the Effective Project Planning and Evaluation (EPPE) course into the Master's Degree in Public Health curriculum. All participants consistently express how the knowledge, skills, and tools gained have enhanced their research capabilities,”.

The regionalization of these courses, facilitated through train-the-trainer methodologies and training workshops, enables TDR to collaborate closely with end-users and address local and regional needs effectively. Additionally, it allows regional centers to become training hubs and leverage existing knowledge and experience in countries with endemic diseases.
